They have put forth stories of what they are living and, in their living, their humanness reveals clearly that it is the determining factor uniting us in our fitrah journeys back to where we came from. Our fiction, our imagining, is a must for bonds to form and barriers to demolish. When our imagination is controlled by our intellect, justice is the result. Take a breath of the blossoms within and refresh your life with the universal Truths and shield it from the blows, inshallah.

FROM the INTRODUCTION

Emotion [is] “what makes you forget you’ve ‘fallen into the world of fiction.’” (Richardson, 2017) Since fiction impacts us through our emotions, the experience can be striking and powerful. Sometimes the story can affect our whole identity. (Oatley, 2002) Indeed as Ayatullah Ibrahim Amini (1980) says, “It is possible that the reading of books might have a deeper impact on the minds of the readers than the other sources of acquiring knowledge…Sometimes, reading brings about a revolutionary change in the outlook of a person.”

…The stories within these pages “move the human heart.” (Jericha, 2012) And know for sure that “the heart relies upon writing,” as Imam Jafar al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, is reported to have said. (Rizvi, 2009, p. 19) We have drawn the writers’ “beautifully-crafted stories” together and emphasize to you that these Muslim stories are varied in voice and topic but hold true to Islam, providing refreshment and resistance. (Jericha) This bouquet of Muslim blossoms, gathered between these two covers, is unique for the mere fact that they could never have been picked, arranged and presented to you by anyone but Inked Resistance Islamic Publishing. Muslims attend western schools with all sorts of people. The young adult Muslim does not view colour, nationality and madhabs like their elders. It was refreshing to read Unravelling the Lie: Step Back, Step Forward without getting bogged down in the characters’ identities beyond being Muslims. The novel kept me on my toes and I couldn`t put it down. (Name Withheld)

This love novel about discrimination within Muslim families and communities is a much-needed discussion. Muslims attend western schools with all sorts of people. The young adult Muslim does not view colour, nationality and madhabs like their elders. It was refreshing to read Unravelling the Lie: Step Back, Step Forward without getting bogged down in the characters’ identities beyond being Muslims. Laila Hasib has done a fine job of keeping those aspects from the reader and guiding us toward the understanding that we’re all human beings and the true criteria in a spouse is piety. (Name Withheld, Somewhere in the USA)

I could taste the suffering of Sakinah and Adam as they tried to unravel the aged traditions and beliefs of their parents to uncover the truth of Islam. I rooted for them throughout the novel. They grappled with not losing hope in love and a future together, but always clung to their love of Allah and Islam’s true and pristine sensibilities. (Name Withheld, British Columbia)

Inshallah, Laila Hasib`s Unravelling the Lie: Step Back, Step Forward will open the eyes of people and enable them to discard discriminatory practices which make Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family, sad. Those of us who miss the point of her novel have lost out. If I needed to, I would request my parents to read her book so I could marry the spouse of my choice. Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family, married women of different backgrounds, nationalities, class and colour. It may be difficult at times, but all marriages require stamina. But we’re all one big family and I see it as the way of the future. (Name Withheld, Markham, Ontario)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Laila Hasib is the author of several young adult novels. I had never experienced the hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), as to living here as a traveler (Bukhari: 6416) and this world being a prison for a believer (Muslim: 2956), but I’ve begun to feel that now. Alas, I had to see so much to feel that, but that is the reality. I learned from my Palestinian brothers and sisters, that they are the people of “Alhamdullilah” (Praise be to Allah), they are the people of living faith, they are the people of “in sha Allah” (if Allah wills). Showing our pain while also not offending those responsible for it (Abdel-Fattah, 2023) is a symptom of our acceptance, as reluctant as it may be, of our status as non-agents within our own story, which is the story the colonizer has invented about us.

We (First Nations, like Palestinians) for too long have succumbed to the belief that if we are to be seen, we must comply with this didaskalia.۞ We need to be grateful for what we have and simultaneously decry what we have un-justly been deprived of. We have to rehash history because it’s always conveniently forgotten, as we only exist in the margins and footnotes of history books: we are but an asterisk, begrudgingly afforded us by benevolent scholars. We experience living in this constant double consciousness of being victimized and having to contend with a system set up to prop up the victimizer. For our testimony to be heard it must be detailed, and perfectly recounted, with receipts of the minute accounts of our butchering (by photographs, written and stamped documents, dated and verified with signatures: we do not control the narrative, because we do not hold the tools that validate that narrative). I have finished the book alhamdullilah & and the paintings were all beautiful too masha Allah and touching.. – Marvi Bhatti, April 22, 2024, Nova Scotia, Canada

Recently one of my articles was published by a Canadian publishing company, in a anthology book. Alhamdulillah! Which is undoubtedly happy and blithe news for me because this is one of the two places I have personally gotten paid for my writing. Another good news is that the entire sale of this book will be donated to the oppressed people of Palestine. Therefore, it is requested to collect a copy and stand by the people of Palestine. – Mizan Rehman, April 24, 2024, Chittagong, Bangladesh

ABOUT THE EDITORS

Laila Hasib is the author of several young adult novels.
