The Role of ijtihād in Legislation is originally a lecture delivered by the great Muslim thinker and reformer Āyatullāh Murtaḍā Muṭahharī after the death of Āyatullāh Burūjirdī in 1962, in which he surveys and expounds the concept of ijtihād and its characteristics.

This booklet deals with such topics as the

meaning of ijtihād, its root in the sunnī and the shīʻah traditions and appearance of Akhbārism in Islamic society.

The reader will leave with a concise understanding of the concept of ijtihad both in its original and modern contexts.
